2019 has been a strange year for video games. There have been some fairly huge announcements, such as the upcoming next generation of consoles, but few blockbuster titles. However, 2020 is already shaping up to be a vintage year for the market. There are some huge games on the horizon, so we take a look at our thoughts on what games will be the most popular in 2020.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

It’s been nearly 23 years since the original Final Fantasy VII launched. As one of the biggest games of the PlayStation 1 era, it made JPRGs and story-driven games popular with a whole new generation. Since an early PlayStation 3 tech demo showing off the opening sequence, fans have been crying out for a full remake. Finally, we’re in touching distance. Final Fantasy VII remake launches in March 2020 on PlayStation 4.

The game will see Cloud, Tifa and Barret return, and it covers and expands on the original’s Midgar opening sequence. The early gameplay footage looks promising, and it could very well be everything we’ve been hoping for.

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt RED’s previous game was a pretty big deal. It redefined the open-world fantasy genre and set a new benchmark for graphics and storytelling. That game was, of course, The Witcher 3. With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why we think Cyberpunk 2077 will be one of the games that will be most popular in 2020.

Launching in April 2020 on Xbox, PlayStation and PC, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a futuristic world where body augmentations are commonplace. It looks stunning, and the gameplay and gunplay both look exciting.

Half Life: Alyx

The Half Life franchise is one of the most beloved in gaming history. However, it’s been over 12 years since we last saw anything from Valve’s flagship series. Half Life 3 has become a meme, and fans question whether we’ll ever see the conclusion to Gordon Freeman’s story. There is good news though, Valve recently unveiled Half Life: Alyx, a VR game set in the same universe.

The trailer for this game looks pretty immense. VR has yet to capture a mainstream audience, but this could be the game to propel it to success. Those who can afford a beast of a PC and a VR headset could be in for a treat in March 2020.

Ghost of Tsushima

Samurai games have had somewhat of a renaissance of late. Titles such as Nioh and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have grabbed the attention of gamers. It’s not hard to see why – the action, history, and overall aesthetic of ancient Japan is fascinating. It’s this zeitgeist that Ghost of Tsushima hopes to tap into.

The game comes from Sucker Punch Productions, the developer behind the Infamous series of games. Early trailers and gameplay videos look very promising, and we’re excited to get into the open world of 1274 Japan. There’s no exact release date yet, but we’re expecting it to be in 2020.

The Last of Us Part 2

The Last of Us was one of the best games of the PlayStation 3 generation. So good, in fact, that it got a remaster for the PlayStation 4. It’s an achievement of storytelling and exploration, with gritty combat, beautiful settings, and scares aplenty.

With the sequel, we’re hoping to see improvements in just about every area. And, so far, the evidence looks promising.  It’s set to launch in April 2020 on PlayStation 4.

Doom Eternal

The Doom franchise is one that’s synonymous with PC gaming. The first game in the series launched back in 1993, and there have been six games and several spin-offs since then. Doom, the 2016 reboot, reinvigorated the series. Its fast-paced combat, visceral graphics, and tight gameplay made it a firm favourite. This return to form means that a sequel, Doom Eternal, is on the cards.

We’d expected to see Doom Eternal at the end of 2019. However, ID Software pushed back the launch until 2020. We’re sure that it’ll be worth the wait.

Marvel’s Avengers

With Marvel’s meteoric rise, we’ve seen superheroes back in vogue. It’s been a tough few years for superhero video games, with the recent Spiderman game being one of the few shining lights. We’re hoping that the new Marvel’s Avengers title can reach those same heights.

The thought of playing in the same universe that we’ve seen so lovingly crafted on the big screen over the last decade is enticing, so we’ll see what May 2020 brings for this title.

Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft is the biggest selling game of all time. From such a simple premise comes a game that has captured the imaginations of young and old. Essentially an in-depth Lego game, the only limit with Minecraft is your imagination. Although the game has changed a lot over the last few years, it’s time for some totally fresh content. That’s where Minecraft Dungeons comes in.

Launching in April 2020, we’ll see the same basics of Minecraft set in a dungeon-crawler setting. It has the potential to be incredibly fun (and addictive), so we’re hoping that developer Mojang pulls it out of the bag yet again.

Halo Infinite

The Halo series is another one that is part of gaming royalty. However, it’s been a while since we’ve been truly excited about an upcoming Halo launch. With Halo Infinite, we see the return of Master Chief, as well as an entirely new game engine.

Halo Infinite is set to launch on Microsoft’s new Project Scarlet console, as well as Xbox One and PC. It could show us an early glimpse of exactly what the new console is capable of, and we can hardly wait.

Overwatch 2

Overwatch is still an incredibly popular game, with a dedicated fan base, e-sports tournaments, and more. The news of a sequel is exciting, and it seems there’s a lot to look forward to. We don’t know exactly when it will launch, but we’re hopeful that it will be in 2020. We’ll see new PVE content for the first time, as well as plenty of PVP mayhem. Exciting times!

So, if you were wondering what games will be the most popular in 2020, this list gives a fairly good idea. Of course, there could always be unexpected titles that take that crown, but many of these are a safe bet.
